It’s been around for a while now, and some recruiters believe that social media will eventually replace traditional methods of finding a job. However, this isn’t as simple as just searching keywords on Twitter and sending off your CV. Currently, very few of our candidates apply to us through Twitter, despite all of our jobs being posted there.
Finding a role
Instead of looking for specific roles or searching keywords online, identify the companies you would like to work for, or people you’d like to work with. You can access company profiles on LinkedIn, and many organisations will post their vacancies here before or even instead of advertising them on traditional job boards. Make sure you’re following the relevant people in your industry on Twitter, (Twellow is an excellent resource for this) and set up RSS feeds to industry blogs. This puts you in the advantageous position of hearing about new roles first.
Once you know who the movers and shakers in your industry are, you need to get their attention. In the real world, networking is the most successful way of landing the job you want, and online it’s no different. Join groups and contribute to discussions on LinkedIn, participate in conversations on Twitter, and comment and post links to relevant, interesting articles and blogs. This will build up your following, and recruiters and hiring managers will be keen to contact you when a relevant job comes up. If you are actively looking, tweet about it, and update your LinkedIn status. If you’ve built up your reputation, you’d be surprised at the results this can yield.
Your online presence
It’s unlikely that all your online presence is focussed on your career, so be aware of what people can see. If your Facebook page has pictures of drunken stag weekends, make sure it’s set to private! Studies show that 83% of US hiring managers will Google candidates before making a decision, so check what comes up and edit as necessary.

Social media is a great tool to assist in your job search – however, it would be a mistake to assume that it’s an easy and quick option. You’ll get out of it what you put in!
